After arriving back home, and taking some much needed rest, Karen, Andrea, the cast, and crew of High School Production Assistants got to work (The entire crew had already begun the research prior to the LA Trip). They began to sketch out ideas on who and what the characters should represent, and narrowed down the points they felt were more important to high school students. Alongside the initial script ideas, the cast continued to research material, which included a trip to various Waikiki Condom shops by Monica, Kris, Rachel, and Richard (Kris and Richard unfortunately could not go into all of them since they were both under 21 at the time). At dinner, the four cast members talked about possible ideas for characters and how they were connected to eachother. By this time, the cast had narrowed down to five cast members, as Daryl Bonilla was forced to drop out of the show due to health concerns.
Because of the now odd number, it was decided that the story would revolve around two couples and a friend caught in the middle. One couple would be the "good examples" who choose a strong relationship and commitment while the other couple would be the "bad examples" who just want to have sex for all the wrong reasons. After that decision was made, the cast began improv sessions and started writing down scene ideas. As time progressed, rough character profiles and a basic storyline were all developed. There was Tommy and Jackie (originally played by Richard and Ly, respectively), who have been dating for nearly a year and are on the verge of taking that, "next big step" in their relationship. Then there's Alex and Tia (originally played by Kris and Rachel, respectively), a player who cheats on his girl and is always on the hunt for other girls to satisfy him, and a girl who feels the only way to keep the love of her life is to get pregnant. Finally, there's Melissa (originally played by Monica...errr, respectively), normally a "good girl" who got wasted one night at a party and slept with the wrong guy...Tia's boyfriend Alex. (Note: It was decided that the cast members would be casted AGAINST type and look. So, because Richard and Ly "looked" more like the player and bad girl, and because Kris, Rachel, and Monica "looked" more like the innocent types, Kris and Rachel got to be the couple that had sex, Monica got to be the girl who got drunk and knocked up, while Richard and Ly got to be the "good couple" who made all the right choices.)
Along with the main plot, Karen also wanted to add in "commercial breaks" in between certain scenes to help progress the storyline and to also add in vital information that couldn't be incorporated in the main storyline. There's also the (now infamous) "Dance Sequence," a representation of Melissa's nightmare. With the help of dancer/choreographer/director Naoko Maeshiba, the cast put together a short movement piece that dealt with Melissa's fears of pregnancy and possible diseases she might have gotten from Alex. (One Oddah Note: Due to time constraints and for the sake of the cast member's sanity, the dream sequence was cut from the show.)
