The Certified Nurse-Midwives at Kalihi-Palama Health Center would like to welcome you and your family to prenatal care. We have been providing health care to women in Honolulu since 1990. In 1996 we were the first certified nurse-midwives to be given privileges at Kapiolani Medical Center and have delivered more than 300 babies. What is a Certified Nurse-Midwife? A CNM is a registered nurse who has completed an additional 1-2 years of education and clinical practice in midwifery. After the completion of training, she must pass a national exam to receive licensure from the American College ofNurse-Midwives. CNMs are experts in caring for women with low-risk pregnancies. We consider pregnancy a normal part of a woman's life and avoid intervention whenever possible. CNMs provide physical and emotional care to the pregnant woman and her family. We continuaIly assess women during their prenatal visits for risk factors. If a woman develop a complication during her pregnancy, a consultation and possible transfer of care will be made to a physician. The Kapiolani Faculty Physicians and Residents provide consultation and medical care if a patient is transferred. The CNMs at Kalihi-Palama believe that every woman has the right to safe and satisfying health care! We believe that pregnancy and birth can be enhanced with patient/family participation and education and we look forward to sharing this pregnancy with you. |
