What Is A Certified Nurse-Midwife? (CNM)

A person educated in both nursing and midwifery. In contrast to the "lay" or "granny" midwife, the nurse-midwife is a registered nurse who has received additional education and training in a program approved by the American College of Nurse-Midwives, has successfuly graduated from that program, and has passed a national certification examination.

Nurse-midwives work together with a physician to provide complete women's health care. While nurse-midwives believe that childbirth is a normal process for women, they always watch for any signs of problems or complications. They always work in a team relationship with doctors and other health professionals so that medical consultation or help is available if needed.

For hundreds of years midwives have advised and assisted women in childbirth and health care. NURSE-MIDWIVES carry on this tradition of personal, family-centered care, taking into account the physical, social and spiritual needs of each woman, and her family. They believe in working closely with patients, providing patient and family education, and helping people be responsible for their own health.
