The Kalihi-Palama Community Health Seminar

An AHEC/University of Hawaii - Community Partnership

Since 1992, over 100 health professions students have participated in this dynamic service-learning course held on-site at Kalihi-Palama Health Center. Each year, a diverse, multi-disciplinary team of health professions students accepts a mission: to prepare and conduct quality health education programs for and with children, parents, and staff of the Princess Miriam K. Likelike Elementary School.

The student team participates in skill-building training to prepare for working in this multicultural/multilingual school and community. Topics include: teamwork, group facilitation and decision-making, community needs assessment, program planning and evaluation, participatory education for children and adults, and cross-cultural competence building. The interdisciplinary team then uses these skills to plan, implement and evaluate health education sessions at the school, including activities such as:

  • Teaching first graders about hygiene, nutrition, and safety
  • Teaching third graders about the heart and lungs
  • Teaching fifth graders about puberty, human sexuality, and transitioning to middle school
  • Teaching and assisting parents enrolled in an adult literacy project
