Spermicide
How It Works
- Kills sperm or prevents sperm from reaching egg.
- Comes in different forms:
- Foam and gels come with applicator.
- Suppository is a solid, meltable tablet.
- The film is a small thin sheet that melts on the cervix.
How It's Used
- Before intercourse, insert spermicide into vagina, close to cervix.
Benefits
- Safe, convenient, and adds lubrication.
- No prescription needed.
- Spermicide reduces transmission of important STD's including gonorrhea
and chlamydia infection.
- Partner can insert or check placement.
Concerns
- May not cover cervix completely.
- May need time to work.
- May be allergic to spermicide.
How Effective Is It?
- Each year, about 26 out of every 100 women who use spermicide alone get
pregnant.
- Each year, about 2 women out of every 100 couples who use spermicide WITH
condoms get pregnant.
