Female Condom
How It Works
- Soft, loose fitting, thin polyurethane pouch which lines the vaginal canal.
- Stops the sperm from entering the uterus.
How It's Used
- The inner ring at the closed end of the condom is inserted into the vagina
just past the pubic bone. The other end remains outside the vagina.
- After sex, twist the outer ring and remove gently.
- The condom is prelubricated. Extra water-based lubricnt is provided for
added ease and comfort.
- Use only once.
Benefits
- Another option for women, controlled by women.
- Safe and convenient.
- No prescription needed.
- Helps protect against HIV/AIDS and other STD's.
- Can be inserted by the women several minutes or hours before intercourse.
Concerns
- May be sensitive to rubber or lubricant.
- Rip or tear in the condom usually caused by something sharp or jagged,
like a rough fingernail, rings or other jewelry.
- Incorrect placement. Should practice before use.
How Effective Is It?
- Each year, about 21 out of every 100 couples who use the female condom
get pregnant, usually due to improper use. Women who use the condom correctly
every time can expect a higher effective rate.
